Timothy (Phleum pratense L.)

Timothy is a perennial, completely hardy grass. Timothy in a vegetative state is well tolerated by livestock. With intensive grazing, like meadow fescue, it faces very strong competition from the latter species in mixtures with perennial ryegrass. This grass thrives on well-drained soils under a regular mowing regime.

In monoculture and fairly intensive use, the digestibility of the organic matter of timothy is very good and comparable to that of perennial ryegrass. Rust infestation is rare; leaf spot disease is more common.

The table below summarizes the main characteristics of the varieties of timothy currently on the Belgian variety list.
